Cost Comparison: FCL vs LCL
As a general rule, LCL costs $50-120 per CBM plus documentation and customs fees. FCL rates from China to the USA range from $2,500-5,000 for a 20ft container and $3,500-7,000 for a 40ft container depending on the route and season.
The break-even point is typically around 12-15 CBM. Below this volume, LCL is usually more economical. Above it, FCL provides better value.
When to Choose FCL
Choose FCL sea freight when: your shipment exceeds 15 CBM, you need faster transit times, your cargo is high-value or fragile, or you require temperature-controlled shipping.
When to Choose LCL
Choose LCL sea freight when: your shipment is under 12 CBM, you’re testing a new market or product, your inventory turnover is low, or you need to ship samples before placing a bulk order.
